
Hexham Abbey is in the centre of our historic market town. Tea rooms open on a Tuesday, and there are nice shops with lots of gifts. Also nearby is the Old Gaol museum, which tells you a lot about the local history. Market days are a Tuesday and Farmers markets sometimes on a Saturday. There is also a swimming pool and a leisure centre. Hexham Racecourse has been the home of National Hunt racing in Northumberland for well over a century. It is now Northumberland's only racecourse.
Just 20 minutes away Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Roman Fort, Chesters Roman Fort, All within 15 miles, Otterburn Mill great for outdoor clothes, rugs, books and general gifts. Lovely coffee shop, open daily. Colt-crag reservoir through to Throckington church, 1 1/2 mile walk, takes around half an hour. Car parking beside reservoir.
1 Hour (24miles) away Kielder Water, all outside activities, birds of prey centre, swimming pool a nice restaurant with gift shop. St. Mary's Lighthouse Whitley Bay, 37 miles and takes around an hour. You can visit Tyne Mouth and walk through to North Shields.

locally the island is rarely referred to by its Anglo-Saxon name of 'Lindisfarne'. Following on from the murderous and bloodthirsty attack on the monastery by the Vikings in 793AD, it obtained its local name from the observations made by the Durham monks: 'Lindisfarne - baptised in the blood of so many good men - truly a 'Holy Island'. Its more appropriate title is 'The Holy Island of Lindisfarne'.

Metro Centre for cinema's bowling, restaurants and of course the shopping. Not far from the Angel of the North well worth a visit too.
The revolutionary home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and landscape genius, was a wonder of its age. Built on a rocky crag high above the Debdon Burn, Cragside is crammed with ingenious gadgets and was the first house in the world lit electrically.
